One step closer to stop piracy.. I think

I met a friend of mine at a wedding and we got talking about how hard it is to stop pirating movies and music. Clearly we wanted to stop this habit. Because it is a form of stealing, and stealing is a sin. I know that this issue can be looked at from many different angles and many arguments can be made regarding what is piracy or not. Or whether it is actual stealing. Point is, our conscience told us that what we are and used to do (when we buy the 50 bob movie, torrent the movie using office internet or torrent that latest album of our most favourite artist) was wrong. So, what do we do? We clearly have to stop this. Since we want to please out heavenly Father. One way we can stop is to look for alternatives. The alternatives I landed on were for Music and MoMovies (A movie rental shop in Kenya). I have been using these services for a while now. Deezer charges me $5 a month and I get ‘unlimited’ music. I have only ran into a very few cases when I wanted an album and I did not get it on deezer. You may ask how to pay for this? Well I also recently got the Nakumatt Global Card. I simply topup that card with money at any Nakumatt branch then I use that card for all my internet transactions. With the Nakumatt Global Card I don’t have to use my bank card with just any website I ran into. Deezer is very similar to Spotify. Google them for more info 🙂 As for movies, I have for a long time been frustrated with some of the movies that I have watched. Mostly cause of the sexual scenes that are prevalent in most movies and some really weird themes that are propagated in those movies. I figured, I really wanted value for my money. Why then can’t I spend money on what I really want to watch. What I know is good for me. Something that will not lead me away from God. It is sooo easy to buy many 50 bob movies and end up defiling your mind with trash. Is it not better to find out the ‘general’ contents of a movie first before watching it? If we are to guard our hearts, isn’t being careful with what we watch part of guarding our hearts? So with this in mind, I registered with MoMovies and every time I want to watch a movie, I would try to find out the contents of the movie from and when I feel confident and at peace about watching the movie, I would go ahead and rent the movie. Renting a movie at MoMovies costs approx 250 for every title. For more details, pay them a visit, they are really friendly. A few times I have ignored the fact that I need to do some ‘research’ about the contents of a movie and I have had to deal with the consequences. I remember one time I rented a movie from MoMovies, but I hadn’t spent sometime to find out the contents of that movie. Well, I was watching that movie with my little sister and out of the blue and I do mean out of the blue, before us was a scene of high school kids fornicating. Man, that was weird 😮 . You should have seen my face. What was my sister thinking about her brother? How do I start explaining to my sister that she needs to do what as I say and not as I do? My sister will always regard how I act more that what I say. But more so, I had sinned against God by allowing such images into my mind. For my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. The truth is

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV

God will always make a way for us to pursue righteousness. And Christ died on the cross so that we would not have to sin.

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Titus 2:11-14 NKJV

Financial limitation should not cause us to sin. If the finances that would not allow you to pirate are not available, could this mean that probably that song or that movie is not necessarily something that you need? If you hold the same conviction as my friend and I, what steps will you take to start pleasing God in this area?

God is all powerful.

We need to believe this and act in righteousness knowing God will not forsake us especially when we desire to do what is right. Be blessed. Please critique and comment. 🙂

  1. This has really helped me actually. Especially when it comes to the music! Thanks a lot man! A simple solution to a complex conscience torturing problem.
